The Legio X Gemina was a legion created by the proconsul Julius Caesar around the year 70 BC. in Cisalpine Gaul. The legionary shown in the illustration (left) is equipped with the panoply typical of Roman legionaries of the late republic, as is the signifer on the right. Both protect their heads with a Montefortino-type helmet reinforced by a front protector and cheek pads of a different model on each one. They are also protected with chain mail armor (lorica hamata) and as offensive weapons the Mainz-type gladius. The legionary also carries an oval shield typical of the Republican era and the signifer also carries the banner with the emblem of the X Gemina, a bull, as it used to be in most of Julius Caesar's legions.
