Roman Auxiliary Cavalry Decurion. 2nd century AD.

Some Roman cavalry units used masks along with Weiler-type helmets. At first it was believed that they were used only in parades and training exercises, but the latest discoveries of masks on battlefields such as Kalkriese, in Germany, have shown that they were indeed used in combat. And not only cavalry units, possibly also some non-commissioned officers such as aquilifer or signifer. This decurion completes the rest of its equipment with scale armor (lorica squamata), oval shield and cavalry sword (spatha).
