In this illustration, we witness the victory of a murmillo gladiator over another gladiator of the thraex type, who kneels and raises the index finger of his left hand in a sign of surrender. The character we see in the background on the left is one of the referees of the gladiatorial combats (summa rudis). This combat pits two very different gladiators against each other: on one side, the murmillo, belonging to the scutarii class, with heavy equipment; on the other, the Thracian, belonging to the parmularii class, with light equipment, although this is not clearly distinguishable in the illustration. Whether the defeated gladiator survives will depend on how he has fought; if he has put on a good show, he will live to fight another day.
